Keeping Your Spot Safe: Vaccination Standards & Host Peace of Mind

Modified on Sun, 15 Feb at 2:29 PM

At K9 Off-Leash Network, our mission is to provide safe, joyful spaces for dogs and their people. To maintain the integrity of your property and the health of the community, we require all Guests to keep their dogs' vaccinations up-to-date. This article explains the standards we set for Guests and the science behind why these requirements are vital for you as a Host.

Guest Requirements: Transparency for Hosts

To help you feel confident welcoming new visitors into your space, every Guest is required to complete a detailed profile for each dog. Before a booking begins, you have full access to view:

  • Dog Pictures: So you can easily identify your guests upon arrival.

  • Vaccination Status: Clear confirmation that the dog is covered, with expiry dates for Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, and Rabies.

  • Digital Records: Guests must upload a Vaccination Certificate as a formal record of health.

  • Reactivity Awareness: Guests must disclose if their dog is reactive. This information is collected specifically for awareness and safety, allowing you to better understand the needs of the dogs visiting your property.

Why Vaccinations Matter (Even in Private Spaces)

While your park is a private environment, the "outdoor" nature of hosting means dogs can be exposed to risks that linger in the environment long after a previous visitor has left. Ensuring all Guests are vaccinated protects your property from becoming a site for "community spreading."

Protection Against Environmental Hazards

Many dangerous viruses are incredibly hardy and can survive in the environment for extended periods:

  • Parvovirus: This highly contagious virus can live in soil for months or even years.
  • Leptospirosis: Often spread by wildlife (like squirrels or raccoons) through urine, this bacteria thrives in puddles or damp soil.
  • Rabies: A legal requirement in most regions, including Ontario. Since our network celebrates the great Canadian outdoors, protecting against wildlife transmission is essential.

Preventing Community Spread

When the majority of dogs using our network are vaccinated, it creates "community immunity." This slows the spread of contagious respiratory issues like Bordetella (Kennel Cough) and protects vulnerable dogs who may visit your spot, such as those with underlying medical conditions.

Understanding Modern Veterinary Standards

It is common for Guests to have questions about the frequency of boosters. Modern veterinary medicine has moved toward strategic vaccination:

  • Core vs. Lifestyle: Core vaccines (Rabies, Distemper, Parvo) are essential. Lifestyle vaccines (Lyme, Bordetella) depend on how much time a dog spends in wooded or social settings.
  • Extended Immunity: Many core vaccines now provide protection for up to three years, reducing the need for annual shots.

Host Pro-Tip: Titer Testing

If a Guest mentions they are concerned about over-vaccinating, you can point them toward Titer Testing. This is a vet-approved blood test that measures a dog’s existing antibody levels. We accept positive Titer Test results as valid proof of immunity for core diseases!

By upholding these standards, you aren't just following a platform rule—you are ensuring your property remains one of the safest communities in Canada for dogs to be dogs.
